Under the Old Covenant believers were required to give  a tenth of their income to God and to the upkeep of the Temple and of those who ministered there (Deuteronomy 14:22, Malachi 3:10).  Under the New Covenant (Luke 22:20, Romans 6:14) we are told that (e)ach of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7).
